Top 10 Highlights of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is an urban maze with narrow and hilly alleyways, mile-high skyscrapers and office towers, all exploding from a motley collection of zillions neon signs. Hong Kong is an eclectic, energetic, trendy and stylish metropolis. Even so, there are heaps of places to find peace and zen.

If a single picture could cover Hong Kong, it would be the panorama from the Peak. Looking down from this outstanding vantage point, you’ll see the top-notch harbour and the oh-so-incredible skyline incomparable to any other city. Sorry, Manhattan!

If you’re going to try dim sum only once during your stay in the city, this is the place. Lie Heung Tea House is a legendary dim sum spot with unpretentious, decades-old interior and authentic cuisine.

The legendary Temple Street Night Market looks like every B-movie Chinatown and consists of small vendors selling everything from sex toys to fake watches. This rowdy ghetto attracts also prostitutes, fortune-tellers and junkies.

Cha chan teng offers a typical fusion of Western and Chinese cuisine and is now something of a cult. Try the much beloved Tsui Wah on Hong Kong Island.

Board the Hong Kong’s iconic cross-harbor ferry and enjoy this pleasant little ride. Crossing the Harbor with Star Ferry is simply a must do.

Hong Kong is not only the well-ordered world of fine hotels and big banks. The other Hong Kong with hash dealers and men trading PCs can be found on the Kowloon peninsula in the Chungking Mansions. This infamous complex of cheap hostels and illegal migrants’ dwellings offers the best Turkish and Indian food though.

The landscaped rooftop terrace of Central’s waterfront mall, the flashy IFC Mall Roof, holds several posh bars and restaurants. Enjoy the million-dollar views.

The tiny island Cheung Chau is just a 12-km (7.5-mile) sail southeast of the city by scheduled ferry. But expect a living fishing community and harbor that is an age away. Pop into the 18th-century Pak Tai Temple, take a peek at the traditional Chinese market and stroll along the beach to see how the traditional Chinese community might have lived decades ago.

Lantau Island is Hong Kong’s largest island that’s well worth a visit with its pristine beaches, traditional fishing villages and spiritual sophistication. One of the most popular tourist attractions on the island is the giant statue of Tian Tan Buddha that offers wonderful views on a clear day.

If you have a long-lasting wish that’s yet to come true, you should visit the Wong Tai Sin Temple where, provided you make an earnest plea to the gods, every wish can come true. Or so it is said. But even if you don’t get your wish, this largest and most popular Taoist temple is still a must.

Seoul City Guide

Another übercrowded and ambitious megacity with skyscrapers, heavy traffic and major boulevards full of posh boutiques. Seoul is a bustling city which has a lot to offer, so make sure to visit some of the best Seoul tourist sites as well as places that are a bit more unconventional.

Gyeongbokgung is a former seat of power and probably Korea’s grandest royal palace. Location of this breath-taking complex at the northern end of Seoul’s main boulevard, Sejongro, is easy to find. Give yourself at least an hour to stroll around the architectural marvels.

Bukchon Hanok Village has the largest collection of privately owned traditional Korean wooden homes or hanok in Seoul. Enter another era and wander through this totally picturesque neighborhood.

If you are into Eastern architecture, you can’t afford to miss one of Seoul’s majestic palaces, Changdeokgung. It is a UNESCO monument and its buildings and gardens are a real gem.

Heaps of well-attired Seoulites shop at Shinsegae Department Store. This dazzling store with a long tradition serves to all of your shopping needs and beyond.

Cheongwadae or Blue House near the Bugaksan Peak is the pad of Korean president. Visit the magnificent offices, this educative sight is free of charge.

Don’t leave Singapore without shopping at the Namdeamun Market where you can find inexpensive clothing, jewelry, accessories, food and much more. A true paradise for shopaholics, although it might get seriously crowded.

If you can’t get enough and the shopaholic in you is fully awake, enjoy the frenzy at the huge Dongdaemun Market. But be sure to have some money left, because you still need to get to the airport.

Learn about the troubled history of Korea and its relationships with its neighbors. The National War Memorial is also a vast military museum with planes, tanks and guns on display. Very relevant and well worth the visit.

For some fabulous views head to the N Seoul Tower. One of Seoul’s landmarks with a restaurant and observation desk at the top.

What to Visit in Shanghai

Shanghai teems with high-rise buildings and towers but the city doesn’t boast must-see sights and attractions like London or New York. The delights of Shanghai are located rather on the street where everyday life unravels with astounding variety. Pick up a pair of chopsticks and dig in this booming metropolis.

When you travel from the airport to the centre, take the world’s very first magnetic levitation train. Shanghai Maglev Train ride is a lifetime experience, although you might feel a bit whiplashed and bewildered at first.

Shanghai is made for walking. You can start your stroll in Fuxing Park and wander the streets past sycamore trees and elegant mansions. Sun Yat-sen was the founding father of modern China and his former residence now houses an elegant museum full of original furnishings.

China’s museums are, in general, badly lighted, with jumbled English information and in pathetic state. The Shanghai Museum is the very opposite and showcases the best of Chinese history and culture. Don’t try to digest it all in one go as the range of artefacts and memorabilia is amazing.

Dongtai Road is the best place to go antique hunting. Amongst all the tourist tat and fakes can be found real treasures and rare goods.

Chinese contemporary art is in its heyday and if you want to visit its centre, head to the buzzing M50 which is full of galleries, cultural venues and ateliers.

Touristy and overcrowded but still the major landmark of Shanghai. The Bund is perfect for a nice stroll along the marvellous historical buildings. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of this riverfront boardwalk.

The soup dumpling, or xiaolong bao, is Shanghai’s greatest culinary joy and you get the very best dumplings at Din Tai Fung. But be warned: the restaurant is to be found in a rather sterile mall.

Sometimes you want China to be a place of narrow lanes and arched bridges as in the ancient ink paintings. The canal town of Nanxun, just a couple hours’ drive from Shanghai, still well preserves its historical houses and laid-back feel. Hire a boat or take a gondola ride and the lifetime experience is guaranteed.

The Next Web Conference took place last week in Amsterdam. It is a leading tech conference in Europe and a great opportunity to keep up with the latest trends in web, mobile and social and meet lots of great people from the start-up world.

What was our best experience (other than doing business)? Definitely Klara, the live cow on stage. She was the key part of a game called “Dungville”. Simply put, your task was to guess where she drops her “dung”. The best prediction won an iPad. You can read more about it on the official website.

Kuala Lumpur is a modern, vibrant and lush-green capital of Malaysia with tall skyscrapers, clean streets and well-organized traffic. If the downtown seems too sterile to you, check our tips on what to do in Kuala Lumpur, turn a corner and streets burst into a plethora of colours, shabby joints, groceries and a chaos of night markets.

Bintang Walk (or Bukit Bintang) is K.L.’s wild strolling and shopping area. Find everything you could ever want to buy. Head to Sungei Wang Plaza that offers a huge variety of shops and sports affordable prices or visit the up-scale Pavilion where you can shop ‘til you drop.

There are many family-oriented attractions in the city but none of them offers so much fun as the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Chase peacocks, pose with parrots and be amazed by flamingos.

One of K.L.’s biggest natural wonders and a definite must-see is a labyrinth of the awe-inspiring Batu Caves. The stunning complex is reachable by 272 steps.

Islamic Arts Museum is an outstanding museum and a wonderful resource center for Islamic studies. The building itself is a gem, and the collections and exhibitions are all top-notch.

Bukit Ceylon is a prominent nightlife strip which features various venues offering everything from Belgium beer to Cuban mojitos. If we should recommend only one place, it’d be No Black Tie. The venue is famous for its jazz concerts and great atmosphere.

What would a trip to Kuala Lumpur be without gawking at the Petronas Towers. If the queue to the midlevel Skybridge is too long, there’s still a lovely KLCC Park all around with many unique features and sights.

Putrajaya, the newly-built administrative centre, represents Malaysia’s future with its man-made lakes, model neighborhoods and empty freeways to the aiport. Putra Mosque is the main mosque and a real architectural jewel of this a bit twisted city.

Tsukiji Fish Market is the largest and busiest fish market in the world. Come early in the morning and see how it bustles with live during the life tuna auctions.

Top Must See Places in Washington

Washington, D.C. is certainly not a fun destination. But in spite of its seriousness, it is a lovely and charming city with wide avenues, waterfront views, old neighborhoods and many things to do. It goes without saying you want to see the White House. But if you are in the city for a short period of time, save yourself the trouble and look at it from the outside as it is extremely difficult to get inside. Washington Monument is visible almost from any place over the city and there is no need to rush for the close-up photo.

Even if you are not digging the tranquil atmosphere of museums, pop into the National Museum of American History. This one is not to be missed on the Mall.

United States Capitol is a beautiful place that still can be visited after 9/11. Get a pass to the gallery and watch your state representatives in action (or inaction).

You’ve been warned, Washington is not a fun place but you can’t afford to miss the Holocaust Memorial Museum. Awe-inspiring exhibits are enhanced by the building’s architecture.

A dark wall at the west end of the Mall with names engraved is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. One of the world’s most moving memorials to loss.

For a nice stroll in the park visit the Meridian Hill Park which is known to everyone as Malcolm X Park. A spectacular natural wonder with some beautiful statues.

There not many truly breathtaking Gothic cathedrals in America, so the Washington National Cathedral is definitely one worth visiting.

Spies are cool and so is the International Spy Museum with its films and interactive displays. One of the most popular attractions in D.C.

Is there anything cuter than Giant Panda? The National Zoo has also orangutans, petting farm, komodo dragons and many more.

Washington has three main party areas which you can visit at night: Georgetown, Adams Morgan and U Street. Enjoy the vibrant bars, fabulous restaurants and splurge shops.

One side trip for aviation fans who want to visit the overcrowded National Air and Space Museum on the Mall. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, located near Dulles Airport, is a wonderful scientific museum offering stunning collections and exhibits in three-level hangar.

Best Savannah Things to Do

The lovely city of Savannah is famous for its southern hospitality and has plenty of sights–historic mansions, museums, old cemeteries–but the best thing about this Georgian city are simply its streets. Take a stroll down River Street which is one of the most charming places in the city and definitely a must-see!

Party like there’s no tomorrow? Yes, we can! Saint Patrick’s Day is a perfect excuse to party in the middle of March and Savannah happens to host one the biggest St. Patty’s Day parades in the US. Watch out for green jello shooters!

The awesome thing about this city is that majority of the greatest Savannah things to do can be found in the Historic District. This walkable area offers Old South charm at its best.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Georgia and its wonderful architecture and peaceful atmosphere is simply impressive.

Fascinating mansion and one of the best known sites in Savannah, Mercer Williams House Museum, has strong story behind and it was even featured in both the book and the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Visiting the birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts may not sound appealing but the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace set in an authentically restored house is just astonishing!

Forsyth Park is a lush public park in the historic city center where you can find a bench and do a bit of people watching. Definitely snap a picture in front of the huge decorative fountain.

Another iconic sight of Savannah is the Bonaventure Cemetery. It’s the largest municipal cemetery with striking history and mesmerizing atmosphere.

If you feel a bit overwhelmed by all these sights, head to Ellis Square where the City Market is situated and browse through this bustling place. It’s not a place you visit, it’s a place you explore.

You might arrive by plane via the Savannah International Airport and want to stay mainly around the Historic District. However, taking a short drive to Tybee Island (tybee – isn’t that a cute name?) is worth it. You can check out the historic lighthouse, relax on the beach or party near the pier.

Last week our Tripomatic team (no, that’s not us in the picture) visited ITB Berlin 2012 - the biggest European tourism trade fair. It is a top-notch event where people working in travel industry from all over the world meet to catch up on the new trends in this field.

You may object that you can get that sort of experience online without travelling all the way to Germany. Not in the slightest! Strolling through the fairgrounds is an unparalleled experience as tiny things here and there can catch your attention and there’s just too many of them. Take these:

Boston City Guide: 10 Things to Do

There are a few things you should know before you land at the Boston Airport. Firstly, do not go in February because the winters are terrible and there will be much more things to do in other seasons. Secondly, do not skip the historic landmarks which form the Freedom Trail and visit at least the Old State House and Old North Church. And thirdly, don’t compare Boston to New York City and indulge in its small city atmosphere.

The ICA, Institute of Contemporary Art in South Boston, is a unique performance space famous both for its collection of contemporary art and its smashing architecture.

Boston’s eight-block-long shopping haven is called Newbury Street. The brown Victorian houses only underline its unique charm.

Enticing path along the Boston side of the Charles River is called Charles River Esplanade and it is a favourite place for joggers and flocks of wild geese. Be careful, they can get angry easily and even attack you. The geese, not the joggers!

Not far from the Esplanade is located the Museum of Science which is super entertaining, intriguing and always changing and will entertain your kids for several hours.

Where do you find the city’s best cafes and restaurants? Try some places which are scattered around the South End.

Fenway Park is a spectacular baseball park where the Red Sox fans gather. Come here if you’d like to see a game.

The Bostonians have one thing in common – they are hyper-educated and with one of the most famous universities in the world nearby, it would be a shame not to pop into Harvard Yard. The bitterness of not being accepted gets even stronger while you are strolling through this tranquil place.
